What Makes a Cleaning Contractor H&S-Compliant?
When appointing a cleaning contractor for your premises — whether it’s an office, school, or housing estate — health and safety compliance must go beyond lip service. As a client, you carry legal responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 when engaging contractors. Here’s what to check.
1. Risk Assessments & Method Statements (RAMS)
Every major task — from chemical cleaning to roof access — should come with site-specific RAMS. A credible contractor prepares and shares these in advance.
2. COSHH Compliance
All substances must be documented under COSHH with proper training given to operatives. Ask to see COSHH assessments and data sheets.
3. Trained & Briefed Staff
Staff should be trained in manual handling, PPE use, sharps risk, and biohazard awareness. Regular toolbox talks and refreshers are essential.
4. Insurance & Competence
Public liability, employers’ liability, and evidence of competence (such as CHAS or SafeContractor accreditation) show commitment to safe delivery.
5. Transparent Communication
Good contractors don’t just clean — they manage risk. They keep you informed, flag potential hazards, and report incidents promptly.
